They were under the infpection of thefelectmen and a certain number of gentlemen ofliberal education, together with fome of the reverendminifters, whofe cuftom it was to make an annualreport to the town of the ftate of the fchools. In1742, when the population of the town was 16,382,there were reported a total of 535 prefent. At thevifitation July i, 1772, there were prefent 823fcholars. During the fiege the town fchools were fuf-pended ; a few children attended the inftructionsof Mr. Elias Dupee, who remained in Bofton, andgratuitoufly devoted himfelf to his employment ofa teacher, in which he took peculiar delight.
