Southern Ocean, seafloor map. This map is centred on the South Pole and the continent of Antarctica (white), surrounded by the tips of South America (left), South Africa (upper right) and Australia (lower right). The seabed depth varies from shallow (light blue) on the continental shelves, to deep (dark blue) in the ocean basins. The main features are the ridge running between South America and Antarctica, the ridge to the south of New Zealand (lower centre) and the ridge running between the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The topography of the ocean basins has been depicted using ETOPO2-2 (Earth Topography) satellite altimetry data. The land areas use data from the Blue Marble satellite mosaic.
