Candida albicans. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the fungus Candida albicans. Rounded yeast-like cells of this fungus have developed into vegetative hyphae of the infectious stage. Candida albicans occurs on moist mucous membranes of the human body such as skin folds, mouth, upper respiratory & female genital tracts. It is usually harmless, but can become pathogenic in patients suffering malnutrition, diabetes, or undergoing antibiotic treatment. Oral and vaginal conditions are otherwise known as thrush or candidiasis. Candida albicans also causes vulvo- vaginitis, a white discharge from the vagina. Magnification: unknown.
