Mediterranean gull (Larus melanocephalus) in flight. Mediterranean gulls are around 36-38 centimetres long with a wingspan of up to 105 centimetres. They are omnivores, scavenging for food and sometimes hunting for small prey. Mediterranean gulls develop a black head during winter but this is lost in summer, leaving just a streaked grey mask. Photographed in Kent, UK, in January.
