Oil tank burled4 feet below sidewalk at curb line. 414 CRUDE OIL AS FUEL IN LOW PRESSURE HEATING SYSTEMS The burning of crude oil as a fuel under cast iron sectional boil-ers for heating purposes was first undertaken in this vicinity by of Fresno, California, about 1900, using the low pressurestraight shot burner, and utilizing the principle of atomization ofcrude oil by compressed air. The troubles arising from this systemwere the noise of combustion, the leakage of oil into the furnace,and the breaking of sections of the boilers. In some instances thewriter has had experience in the Schools of the City and Countyof San Francisco, where the class rooms over the boiler room couldnot be occupied, because of the excessive noise due to combustion.
