1870: An artist sketching the River Wye through a doorway of Chepstow Castle at Chepstow, Monmouthshire, South Wales. It is the oldest surviving post-Roman stone fortification in Britain. Located on cliffs above the River Wye, construction began in 1067 under the instruction of the Norman Lord William fitzOsbern.
