The ulcer may heal and lead to cicatricialchanges, which later on may cause a marked obstruction, with a considerabledegree of dilatation above the stricture. These cases do not exhibit amarked degree of cachexia, though wasting may follow from conditions due to cicatrisation of the oesophagus following upon theswallowing of caustics, there is generally a history of such an occurrence,and the duration of the symptoms may extend over several vears.
