The painting shows how his glance faces with numerous small figures, such as the 'Winter Landscape with Skaters' (SK-A-1718), were made around 1620 site for performances with wide, frozen canals and flooded fields in which trees, architecture and banks play a subordinate role. Tents, a gallows and an unidentified cityscape in the distance give the setting, but the emphasis in this work on the figures, which show considerably more detail here than in his earlier paintings. In the immediate foreground Avercamp placed the relatively large characters. They represent the different classes on the ice with their distinctive activities. With respect to the lighter and softer painted figures in the background, they make a harder, more sharply-drawn impression. It is also typical that he moved the figures into groups on the ice, often along diagonal lines, which lead to the depth of the eye of the viewer in. [P.
