REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON THE PROPER HEIGHT OF CAKSTEPS The committee appointed by you, to take up the question of theproper height of .car steps beg to report as follows: It is recommended that the maximum height between the topof rail and first step of all passenger cars of the box type be 18 ins., with a minimum height of 14 ins. That the maximum distance between the first step and platformof car be 15 ins., with a minimum distance of 12 ins. That the iriaximum distance between platform of car and topof floor of car be 10 ins., with a minimum distance of 8 It is the opinion of the committee that an ideal condition wouldcall for a height of 17 ins. from top of rail to the first step, andfrom the first step to the platform 14 ins., and from the platformto the floor of car 10 ins., making a total distance from top ofrail to floor of car 41 ins. It is also recommended that the treadof all steps be not less than 10 ins. .\ sketch showing these conditions is herewith attached. After reading the report Mr. Peck said that it was signedby two members of the conuuittee.
