Comma butterfly (Polygonia c-album) rests, wings spread, on a thistle showing its ragged wing edges and brown and black pattern

Comma butterfly (Polygonia c-album) rests, wings spread, on a thistle showing its irregular wing edges and brown and black pattern. Comma butterflies are commonly referred to as angelwings due to the ragged wing edges. They have a wingspan of about 45mm and are brown in colour with a black, mottled pattern. When folded the wings resemble a fallen leaf hence camouflaging the butterfly. They are found in northern Africa, across Europe and Asia as far as Japan living in open woodland, grasslands and gardens.
