Vintage photo of Irish-American boxer Edward "Gunboat" Smith (1887 - 1974). Smith, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, won the Heavyweight Championship of the Pacific Fleet while serving in the US Navy and after turning professional was regarded for a time as a leading "White Hope" to regain the World Heavyweight Championship. He fought some of the leading boxers of his era including future champions Jess Willard and Jack Dempsey and after retiring became a referee and a movie actor.
