But inthe country, one is apt to know every one who livesfor several miles around — the fathers and mothers. One is apt to know every one who lives for several miles around. and the grandfathers and grandmothers and the hiredmen and the little children. Boys and girls in thecountry know when the neighbors bees swarm ; howmany chickens they raise ; and whether they canbake good cookies. They know, too, where thebest apple trees grow and what people have thekindest hearts. And before they are very old, everycountry boy and girl learns the law of the country COUNTRY BOYS AND GIRLS 3 road — that a lighter load always gives the wholeroad for a heavier one. So while the country might not, at first thought,seem the place where there is the best chance to growthrough knowing other people, it does offer a bigchance for the kind of everyday neighborliness whichcounts for so much in life. 2.
