Molluscum contagiosum papules on the skin of an 11-year-old boy. This viral infection results in these firm, dome-shaped, pearly papules (raised areas) with characteristic central umbilication. The pox virus that causes this is harmless and commonly occurs in children. The papules secrete a fluid and a crust forms before healing occurs. The condition usually clears up in a few months but may require medical treatment. The disease is highly contagious through skin contact with the affected area.
