He also expressed regret at not being'able to be present. In the evening Geo. Rooding spoke on his pet hobby, the Smyrna fig, illustrating his most inter- esting lecture with colored lantern slides. The second day of the convention was almost entirely devoted to papers and reports, all of which were of great inter- est. One of the most interesting of all was John Morley's, on "Treating Our Refractory Soils with Dynamite," and he explained his methods quite clearly. Ladies' night was under the auspices of the San Diego Floral Association and consisted o'f music and a splendid paper by the editor of the California Garden, Alfred D, Robinson. His colored slides of plants and flowers were magnificent. He was followed by Miss Kate Sessions and Theodore Payne, of Los 'Angeles, the evening terminating with a dance. Saturday was given up entirely to pleasure. In the morning the visitors were all taken to the grounds and build- ings of the Panama-California exposi- tion, where a rich tceat awaited them. There never was a more magnificent site for a big show and the grounds and buildings are in an advanced state of preparation. The lovely park vistas, with the ocean and historic old town and Point Loma in the near distance, form a setting that could not be matched anywhere. At noon a picnic lunch was given at the Mission Cliflf park. Auto- mobile rides to points of interest in the afternoon and a fine banquet at night wound up the finest conventio
