At each of these places it became my duty to pay an official visit to the commandant, who was always a general. Having arranged the time and place, I landed to pay ^.ny respects in full uniform, attended by our consul. A ragged guard of honour received me, composed of the most wretched lot of poor half-starved vagabonds. They never had any shoes, and their garments were scanty. A brass band struck up an apology for "God save the Queen," and continued playing it during the interview.
