Spruce and Hemlock. A. Altoa. White Spruce—A native tree of medium size, varying in height from 25 to 50 feet, of pyramidal form, foliage silvery-gray, and bark light colored. Very hardy aud valuable. See cut. A. ECxcelsa. Norway Spruce.—From Europe. An elegant tree, extremely hardy, of lofty, rapid growth, and pyramidal form. The branches assume a graceful, drooping habit, when the tree attains 15 or 20 feet in height. One of the most popular evergreens for planting, either as single specimen trees, or in masses for effect or shelter. It is one of the best evergreen hedge plants. A, Canadensis. Hemlock Spruce.—A remarkably graceful and beautiful native tree, with drooping branches and delicate dark foliage like that of the Yew; distinct from all other trees. It is a handsome lawn tree and makes a highly ornamental hedge. A» Pungfens.—Colorado Blue Spruce—Known for a time under the following names: Abies Menziesii, Abies Menziesii Parryana, and Abies Engel- mani. One of the hardiest and most beautiful of all the spruces; in form and habit similar to the White Spruce; foliage of a rich blue or sage color; an important acquisi- tion. A. Douglasii.
