In 1836he was a member of the convention which declaredTexas independent of Mexico, and became the firstTexan Secretary of War. After General Houston waswounded in the battle of San Jacinto, Rusk becamecommander of the army, and held this position tillthe constitutional government of Texas was organ-ized, in October, 1836.
