The compressor is of the compound type, and the efficiencyshown, working against a pressure of 60 lbs. per sq. in., exceeded. AUTOMATIC CONTROLLER AND RHEOSTAT 750 The bearings are of ample size and length, self-oilingand self-aligning. The armature is of the type known as ironclad, built up of discs of sheet iron perfectly laminated one fromthe other, and with grooves punched to receive the armature core is mounted on a bushing independent of theshaft and keyed to it. This construction allows of expansion and 85 per cent. It is bolted to the end of the motor, the crank shaftextending at this end to receive a gear wheel, meshing witha pinion on the armature shaft directly above. The cylinders andupper half of housing and gear case are cast in one piece, carry-ing one-half of the bearings for crank shaft. The lower half ofthe housing and gear case, together with the base for motor and STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. [Vol. XV. No. 4. 258 the other half of the bearings for crank shaft are also cast in onepiece. The crank shafts and connecting rods are of cast steel. Thevalve seats and valve bonnets
