Yde Girl. Reconstructed face of Yde Girl, a \bog body\" dated 170 BC to 230 AD. The mummified head and body of this girl aged about 16 years was discovered in 1897 in a bog near Yde, province of Drenthe, Netherlands. She had the right half of her hair cropped and met a violent death by strangulation. With the body was the remains of a worn woollen cloak. Yde Girl suffered mild scoliosis (lateral curvature) of the spine. Many ancient bog bodies of northwest Europe met violent deaths by murder or religious sacrifice. Low temperature and oxygen, and high tannins in bog waters led to the mummification."
