Owing to the lateness of the season no build-ings were commenced until the spring of 1787, j3 SANTA BARBARA when a house for the missionaries, about 15 by 45feet in size was erected; also a chapel about 15by 40 feet, a servants room, granary, house forunmarried women and one for unmarried buildings were of adobe with walls aboutthree feet thick, having roofs of heavy rafters towhich were tied long poles or canes.
