Barnett Rosenburg. Portrait of Barnett Rosenburg, the US chemist who, in 1962, discovered the anti-cancer drug cisplatin. Following a 1962 experiment in which platinum electrodes were used to find out whether electrical current would kill bacteria, Dr. Rosenberg discovered that cisplatin (also known as cisplatinum or cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II), or CDDP) inhibited cell division. He showed that cisplatin and other platinum-containing compounds were effective against certain cancers. Cisplatin was approved by the FDA as a chemotherapy drug in 1978, revolutionizing the treatment of certain cancers.
