The only one known to havebeen carried unsurrendered from the Camp, waspresented to the Missouri Historical Society in1907, by Mr. Michael McEnnis, of Kirkwood, whowas a member of the Camp. The surrender ofCamp Jackson is depicted in The Crisis by Win-ston Churchhill, and used effectively in the stag-ing, in the Third Act. One of the memorable incidents in Saint Louishistory was the visit of the great Indian, Chief ofthe Ottawas, Pontiac, in 1769. He came to visithis friend St. Ange de Bellerive, then governor, andwas received with great honor. During his stay he went to Cahokia, and wasthere murdered by an Indian, whom an Enghsh-raan bribed to kill him. His body was brought toSaint Louis and buried here. In after years thelocation of this grave was for a long time unknown,but afterwards discovered in making excavations,and in 1900 the St. Louis Chapter of the Daughtersof the American Revolution erected a handsomememorial tablet to his memory in the great hallof the Southern Hotel, on Fourth and WalnutStreets, near where it was found his grave was lo-cated.
