Hebecame District Judge in 1878, and was appointed a memberof the Board of Regents of the State University, but owing toill health could not serve. Ector was born in Putman County, Ga., February 28,1822. He was educated at La Grange, Ga., and at CenterCollege, Kentucky. He began the practice of law in his native county in 1845, and in the sameyear was elected to the Legisla-ture in that State. He came toTexas in 1849 and located atHenderson, where he practicedlaw. He was elected and servedin the Texas Legislature in1855. In 1861 he enlisted as aprivate and soon afterward wasappointed Adjutant by Colonel(afterward General) Hogg. Af-ter the battle of Shiloh he wasmade a Colonel for gallantry onthe field, and two weeks laterwas made a Brigadier General. He was in the battles of Chicka-mauga, Murfreesboro and other engagements, and while fightingnear Atlanta on the 28th of July, 1864, he received a wound whichnecessitated the amputation of his left leg.
