US geneticists at a conference. Croatian-US geneticist Milislav Demerec (left, 1895-1966) with US geneticists Warren Poppino Spencer (1898-1969) and Benjamin Paul Sonnenblick (1909-1998). From 1941 to 1960, Demerec was the director of the Carnegie Institution Department of Genetics, New York, USA. Spencer, a professor at Wooster College and research fellow at Caltech, was awarded the Leidy Medal in 1949. Sonnenblick studied at New York University (PhD, 1938), pioneering methods of studying fruit fly eggs. He later specialised in radiation protection.
