Jet exhaust nozzle turbulence modelling. Supercomputer model of the mixing of the free-shear layer noise from a jet engine's exhaust nozzle. The complex turbulence that affects the noise produced by a jet engine is being studied to help produce the next generation of low-noise jet engines. The colours indicate vorticity magnitude, from low (blue) to medium (green) to high (red). This research will help reduce the impact of aeroplanes on residential areas near airports. This model is a scalable, compressible Computational Aero-Acoustics (CAA) solver, based on Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The results were published in 2011.
