The scenic beauties of the mountainsof Utah are not limited to the neighbor-hood of Salt Lake City, nor to the Cot-tonwood districts, but with almost infinitevariety they are distributed from end toend and side to side of the change of latitude the characteristicsare markedly different. The mountainssurrounding Cache Valley and aroundBear Lake present the appearance of thosebelonging to the cool temperate zone,being wooded with firs and crested withsnow; while those of the extreme south-ern part of the territory are not onlydifferentin contour, but bear a vegetationsuggestive of semi-tropical climes, suchas huge flowering cacti, and a speciesof cactus, palm, while the firs give placeto cedars, which much resemble thecypress of eastern lands.
