James I, byname James the Conqueror (Montpellier, 1208-Valencia, 1276). Count of Barcelona and king of Aragon (1213-1276), Valencia (1239-1276) and Majorca (1229-1276). Detail of the monument in Salou, province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. It evokes the historical date of September 5, 1229, when the Catalan fleet led by King James I left this point to conquer Majorca. The sculptural ensemble is formed by a sailboat with the figure of the king in the stone, and the horse in stone covered with gold leaf. The monument was inaugurated on November 28, 1965. It was made by the architect Salvador Ripio and the sculptor Lluis Maria Saumells.
