The Administration Block, High Royds Hospital. One of the last buildings to be redeveloped into housing at Chevin Park.
Once known as the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum, High Royds was a former psychiatric hospital situated near the village of Menston, West Yorkshire. It was a large self sufficient site which provided work in the forms of mostly agriculture and market gardening for the patients who resided within the hospitals many wards. Building work started in 1885 on the Gothic style stone buildings and was formally opened on 8 October 1888, serving the communities in and around Leeds. It even had its own railway line which closed in 1951. By 2003, the hospital became outdated and closed. Surrounding and more modern hospitals are now used for the patients of our times. A huge redevelopment of the complex started in 2011 and the Grade II listed Administration Block along with its Clock Tower are still untouched by the building work. Most of the other buildings are now completed with the properties now homes. High Royds has been inspirational to musicians and film crews since its closure and played part to hosting many films and TV programs. The Admin building has an eerie feel as natural decay is now prevalent. Its now faded and once grand décor has also become a magnet to the Urban Exploring community who now see this as an attraction to inject atmosphere into their photography works.
