View SSE from Upper East Side Path, Lundy Island, Devon, UK, of Rat Island (L) & the South Light above Landing Bay with Marisco Castle on Castle Hill (R). South Light was built in 1896 to replace the Old Light on Beacon Hill which was frequently invisible to shipping because of thick fog. The architect for Trinity House was Sir Thomas Matthews. It was first lit in 1897 & became automated in December 1999; the electricity is supplied by solar panels. It is 53m (174ft) above sea level.
