Following is the inscription on hisgravestone : EDWARD TISDALE 2, 1867 aged82 yrs. 4 months In youth his heart received a stroke;Too strong to bend ; alas ! it broke,Shrouding his mortal life in gloom;Happy he lives beyond the tomb. Edward and Ruth (Harlow)Tisdale, was born February 24, 1780, the year of theDark Day, which occurred May 19, and was so calledon account of a remarkable darkness on that day extendingover all New England. In some places persons could notsee to read common print in the open air for several hourstogether. Birds sang their evening songs, disappearedand became silent; fowls went to roost ; cattle soughtthe barnyard, and candles were lighted in the Edward, participating in the general alarm, and,in common with his neighbors, thinking the dreadfuldarkness portended the Day of Judgment, took his wifeand family and hastened to his fathers home, the Tis-dale Tavern, about a mile and a half away. The obscu-ration lasted the rest of the day, but with the rising ofthe sun the next morning the darkness had vanished,confidence was again restored, and the people resumedthe
