Pizzo is a town in the Vibo Valentia province on the western, Mediterranean coast of the region of Calabria in southern Italy. Built on the ruins of Napitia or Napitum, a colony of an ancient tribal group, the Focesis. Destroyed in the 4th C AD. by a Saracen attack. Notorious for having been the place of the capture and shooting of the former king of Naples, Napoleon's brother in-law, Giachino Murat. Popular seaside resort and a thriving fishing centre. Pizzo is known for its scenic, rugged coast, long sandy beaches, pleasant climate and the best ice cream in the world. The nearest airport is Lamezia Terme, about 10 km from the town. Surrounding the town square are about 15 of the 60 gelateria (ice cream shops) in Pizzo. The signature ice-cream is called Tartufo, after another delicacy, the truffle. Pizzo’s castle was built in late 1400 by Ferdinand of Aragon. Population: 8,500.
