During several days we only saw this or that portion of thepanorama I have described, according to the caprice of the wind, whichwould tear away the cloud masses here and there, letting in a rift ofsunlight speedily obscured again by the marshalling of the cold mistsor a fresh onset of snow or sleet. I have already mentioned that theDuke had noted from the southern ridge of K- a depression in the circleof mountains around the amphitheatre of Broad Peak, and had formeda project of climbing up to it for a glimpse of the region east of theGasherbrums.
