Architect Adolph Loos' famous early modern building Looshaus (1911) on Michaelplatz. The Emperor was so offended by the austere facade of Looshaus—actually a lovely building—he ordered the palace curtains to be closed so he wouldn’t have to look at it. In the plaza itself, between the palace and Looshaus, a sewer maintenance project recently revealed the ruins of a fine Roman house.
