Robert Darwin (1766-1848), English physician and father of Charles. Greater in bulk than judgement (he is said to have weighed some 160 kg), Robert Darwin accused his son of disgracing the family when his attempts to become a doctor and then a priest ended in failure. When Charles announced his intention to join the crew of the Beagle as a naturalist his father was against it, believing the venture unfitting for a future minister. In spite of this Charles Darwin joined the expedition and went on to become a legend in biology after proposing the theory of evolution by natural selection.
