Reproduced from a micro-photograph furnished by Prof. E. T. Reichert of the University of under different conditions. For instance the number may beincreased after the transfusion of blood of the same speciesof animal; by residing in a high altitude; or as a result ofstrenuous physical exercise continued over a short period oftime. An increase is also noted in starvation; after partakingof food; after cold or hot baths; after massage, as well asafter the administration of certain drugs and accompanyingcertain diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery and yel-low atrophy of the liver. A decrease in the number occurs inthe different forms of anaemia. The number has been knownto increase to 7,040,000 per cubic millimeter as a result ofphysical exercise, while 11,000,000 per cubic millimeter havebeen noted in cases of polycythemia and increases nearly asgreat in cyanosis. The number has been known to decreaseto 500,000
