He participated in the Manassas campaign,and was engaged in the first battle of Bull Run, July 21,1861, with two companies of the Eighth Infantry. Upon returning to Washington, after that battle, he was onduty as part of the provost guard until October of thesame year, when he was ordered to Fort Hamilton, NewYork, to assist in reorganizing the Eighth Infantry,which had previously been surrendered by GeneralTwiggs, in Texas. He was ordered to the field again inMay, 1862, and served in the valley of Virginia, in com-mand of a company of his regiment, until the battle ofCedar Moun
