Mr. Schmitt belongs to the Catholic church and is a member of the Knights ofColumbus. For many years he was identified with the Milwaukee Athletic Club butis not connected therewith at the present time. His business and its allied interestshave constantly made greater and greater demands upon his time and energy. Thebuilding now occupied by the firm is situated at 1707 Grand avenue. It was designed. CONRAD SCHMITT HISTORY OF :\riTAVATKEE 813 and erected by Mr. Schmitt in 1911 and now stands as one of the monuments toMilwaukees arcliitectural adornment. He and his sons have made numerous trips toEurope in connection with research work, visiting Rome, Florence, Paris, Munich andother art centers. It has been this research work and comprehensive study abroadthat have placed them in advance nf many other firms of similar character in theUnited States. Patrons visit them from all parts of the country and it is said theirstudios bring more people here than some of the large manufacturing Schmitt has one of the most extensive art libraries in the United States, coveringall branches of mural and decorative art. He was instrumental in organizing theSociety of Decorators in Milwaukee. He is also a charter member of the NationalAssociation of Decorative Arts and Industries.
