The disease has been around since ancient times, often surrounded by terrifying, negative stigmas. Leprosy is caused by Mycobacterium leprae, a slow-growing bacillus that is an obligate parasite with a disposition for peripheral nerves, skin, and mucous membranes in the cooler parts of the body, such as the upper respiratory tract, anterior chamber of the eye, and the testes. Today, about 180, 000 people worldwide are infected with leprosy. Multidrug therapy, namely with dapsone, rifampin, and clofazimine, is the only effective treatment.
