Neonatal chlamydial conjunctivitis, showing a blood-stained discharge from the infant's closed, swollen eyes. This inflammation of the conjunctiva, the delicate mucous membrane covering the front of the eye & the insides of the eyelids, is due to the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. The conjunctiva becomes red, swollen & may discharge water or pus. Chlamydial conjunctivitis of the newborn is acquired during birth from an infected mother. Untreated infections may result in scarring of the conjunctiva & an increased risk of developing C. trachomatis pneumonia.
