Manzanilla-Mayaro, Trinidad: Sargassum algae on the Manzanilla-Mayaro Beaches. In the Caribbean there has been a significant increase in recent years.

A photograph showing Sargassum seaweed on the Manzanilla-Mayaro Beaches. These beaches are located on the East Coast of Trinidad. In recent years there has been a significant increase in Sargassum seaweed entering the Caribbean oceans and shorelines. Scientists believe that this increase is due to climate change. In the Caribbean, this increase is negatively affecting the tourism industry, the livelihoods of fishermen and other stakeholders who directly or indirectly depend on the ocean for some sort of resource or resources. However, some stakeholders in the agriculture industry are using the seaweed as a fertilizer for their crops. On going research is currently underway to discover the other benefits of this aquatic plant. Sargassum seaweed is a type of brown algae. They contain the pigment fucoxanthin which is responsible for their brown coloration.
