Mr. Emmet was a thorough classical scholar, and conversant with the physi-cal sciences. During his detention at the fortress in Scotland, he wrote partof an Essay toward the History of Ireland, which was printed in New Yorkin 1807. His private life was irreproachable, his countenance strong and regu-lar, and frame erect and manly. His features bore an expression of sorrow ;and the first impression that one had on looking at him might induce the be-holder to say, There is one who has thought much and suffered much.
