Ovin's Cross: an early C8th memorial in the S aisle of the nave of Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire, England, UK. Ovin was steward to St Etheldreda, Queen of Northumbria, foundress & abbess of the Anglo-Saxon double monastery (for monks & nuns) at Ely in 673. The cross-base bears a Latin inscription in Roman capitals: "Thy light to Ovin grant, O God, and rest Amen". St Ovin (Owen, Owin, Ouini) became a monk at Ely, then Lastingham & finally Lichfield where he died around 680. Danes destroyed Ethedreda's monastery & it was refounded as a Benedictine monastery for men in 970. Work on the present cathedral started around 1081 under Abbot Simeon. Ovin's cross stands before a blind arcade of the Norman cathedral church.
