HATES, Rutherford Birchard, nineteenthpresident of the United States, was born at Dela-ware, O., Oct, 4, 1823, third son of Rutherford andSophia (Birchard) Hayes. His earliest paternal an-cestor in. this countiy was George Hayes, a Scotch-man, who, prior to 1680, settled in Windsor, Conn.;was married to Sarah Dibble, and in 1698 removedto the Salmon brook district, Simsbury, jiow in thetown of Gri-anby. His son, Daniel, was captured bythe Indians during ^ueen Annes war, and after liv-ing among savages in Canada for several years, wasransomed by the colony of Connecticut. , son of Daniel, removed to New Haven, andthence to Branford, in both places acquiring consid-erable property as a blacksmith and a maker ofscythes. His wife, Rebecca, daughter of JudgeJohn and Sarah (Trowbridge) Russell, was a de-scendant of Rev.
