Among the wholesalers, it was decided thatthey should gather on the vacant land near the rail-road, in the level district south of Townsend was at first intended as a temporary measureto avoid clearing away the mass of wreckage in theold district: but as time went on it came to belooked on as a permanent change. The heavy ex-pense of drayage had been a great handicap in theold location north of Market street (which hadgrown up when everything came by steamer) andthis was entirely dispensed with in the new July the wholesalers were shipping 250 carloadsof produce daily to interior and coast customers.
