Prieuré de Carluc

Prieuré de Carluc : A Charter of 1011 mentions the independent monastery of Saint Pierre de Carluc : quote "Nous Aldebert et Gui de Riez donnons audit abbé Archinric, à ses successeurs et a ses moines à Saint Pierre de Carluc qui est consacré en l'honneur de ce saint apôtre, l'église et le lieu d'Estoublon" unquote. in the following century thanks to the donations and to the affiliation to Montmajour,a major abbey near Arles, there was a vast building programme, the vestiges of which are visible today. In the 14th century, refurbishment brought the Priory to its peak before it fell into decline. Sold as national property during the Revolution,it belonged to private owners until it was acquired by the Commune de Cereste in 2000. Several campaigns of excavation led by Guy Barruol from 1960 to 1970 revealed its historical interest.
