Vintage photo circa 1920s of American actor, screenwriter, director and producer Douglas Fairbanks Sr (1883 - 1939) and his second wife Mary Pickford (1892 - 1979). Fairbanks, born Douglas Elton Thomas Ullman, is best remembered for swashbuckling roles in silent movies such as The Thief of Bagdad (1924) and The Mark of Zorro (1920) and became so popular that he was dubbed "The King of Hollywood". Pickford, born Gladys Marie Smith, was also an actress and was known as "America's Sweetheart", "Little Mary" and "The girl with the curls". The Canadian-born star was one of the most famous women in the world in the 1910s and 1920s and she won the best actress Oscar in 1929 for the film Coquette. Fairbanks and Pickford were married from 1920 - 1936 and were both founding members of film studio United Artists (1919) and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (1927).
