In 1735, hepurchased a property on the southside of Chestnut Street, above SecondStreet, where he oi)ened an apothecaryshop which was considered the mostcomplete this side of New York City,and possil)ly the earliest of its tyi)ein the City of Philadelphia. Sus-l)ended over the projection of the gable roof on Chestnut Street was a large gilded ball, and the store wascommonly known as the Golden Ball. In 1772, he withdrew fromactive participation in commercial matters, but, for years thereafter,continued to tal^e an active interest in pubHc affairs. Because ofhis miHtancy. he was expelled from membership in the OrthodoxSociety of Friends, and became one of the founders of the FreeQuakers. He was active in the movements in opposition to theaggressions of the Crown, and was a member of many of theCitizens Committees appointed in connection with these move-ments. It is recorded in the Congressional Record that in 1776Christopher ]\Iarshall of Philadelphia, the well-known druggist andmuch-respected member of the Society of Friends, was commis-sioned to look after the needs of the sick and wounded in the hos-pitals of Philadelphia.
