FORT BELVOIR, Virginia — The M4 Sherman tank exhibit at the National Museum of the United States Army features the Cobra King, the historic tank that broke through to Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. The display includes technical specifications of the M4 Sherman and honors the crew of Lieutenant Charles P. Boggess who reached the besieged 101st Airborne Division on December 26, 1944.

The M4 Sherman tank exhibit showcases America's primary battle tank of World War II, featuring the legendary Cobra King of Company C, 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division. This M4A3E2 Sherman achieved fame by breaking through to the besieged town of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, linking up with the surrounded 101st Airborne Division. The display includes detailed technical specifications of the M4 Sherman, including its 75mm main gun, 30-caliber machine gun, commander's periscope, radio equipment, and drive system. The exhibit highlights how American industry produced 53,000 Sherman tanks during the war, with the versatile M4 chassis serving as the foundation for tank destroyers and self-propelled artillery. The display also features the tank's crew members: 1st Lt. Charles P. Boggess, Cpl. Milton Dickerman, Pvt. James G. Murphy, Pvt. Hubert S. Smith, and Pvt. Harold Hafner, who achieved their historic breakthrough at Bastogne before the tank's final mission to Hammelburg in March 1945.
