The choice, at the secondballot, fell on William Capers, of SouthCarolina, and on Robert Paine, of Ten-nessee, who, at the great New YorkConference, had been chairman of thecommittee which drew up the Plan ofPacification. He was a typical speci-men of the Southern gentlemen of theold school, courteous and scholarly. Heentered the Tennessee Conference in theyear 1816, and saw hardships and perilsin Alabama and among the Choctaw In-dians. Eight years later, when presid-ing elder in Tennessee, he attended theGeneral Conference at Baltimore.
