Head nearly as long as deep ; snout rounded, f length of head, MARCUSENIUS. 65 projecting a little beyond mouth; latter small, inferior, its width ^length of head ; teeth truncate or feebly notched, 5 in upper jaw, 6 inlower; nostrils halfway between end of snout and eye ; eye moderate, |-length of snout, a little more than -j interorbital width. Dorsal 22-24,originating above 10th ray of anal, its length 2^- times in its distancefrom head. Anal 30-31, 1£ times as long as dorsal, nearer base of Fig. Marcusenius , after Sauvage (N. Arch. Mns. 1880). f. ventral than base of caudal. Pectoral pointed, as long as head, twice aslong as ventral, extending beyond base of latter. Caudal with pointedlobes. Caudal peduncle 4 to 5 times as long as deep, a little longer 7 11 than head. 62 scales in lateral line, ^ in transverse series on body, -gin transverse series between dorsal and anal, 12 round caudal above, silvery beneath; head speckled with brown.
